Should I Use OEM Parts Or Aftermarket Parts

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts are made by the original car manufacturer and are often times the exact same parts used in new Honda vehicles. Aftermarket parts, meanwhile, are made by manufacturers other than the original manufacturer, and are used as alternative replacement parts to the original manufacturer parts.

When you bring your Honda to be repaired at Orangeville Honda, or any other Authorized Honda dealer, any damaged components will be replaced with OEM parts as a standard. If you have your car repaired at an independent mechanic shop, you will usually have the option to choose either OEM parts or their aftermarket equivalents. Let’s take a look at the difference between OEM parts and aftermarket parts, and which you should use in your Honda.

Aftermarket Parts

Some will argue that it is better to use aftermarket parts when repairing your vehicle. This may be true if you know what you’re doing and know exactly which part to buy.

Here are some general factors to consider when looking at aftermarket parts.

Less Expensive. Aftermarket parts almost always cost less than OEM parts. But, when you factor in the potential of lower quality, inconsistency and possible failure, they may end up costing you more in the long run.
Quality. To be fair, aftermarket parts have seen improvements in overall quality in recent times. If you know what to look for, you may have good luck finding quality aftermarket parts.
Variety. Unlike OEM parts with their limited but precise selections, you’ll find a wide variety of aftermarket parts available to choose from. You need to be sure you’re selecting the right component to repair your vehicle, otherwise it could cause other issues.

On the other hand, if you want to change the performance of your vehicle in a particular way, say, with a different type of muffler, then you’ll find what you’re looking for in aftermarket parts.

Genuine Honda Parts

When your Honda needs a part replaced, the safest, most reliable option is to use Genuine Honda Parts. These parts are made by Honda, and are typically the exact same part your Honda was originally built with. If you bring your car in to be repaired an Authorized Honda Dealership, your car will receive Genuine Honda Parts.

Here are other benefits to consider:

Cost:  Even though OEM parts are generally more expensive than aftermarket parts, that does not necessarily hold true with Honda parts. Honda is a global manufacturer with standard parts across their line of vehicles. Since replacement parts are common, they’re cheaper than most other manufacturer’s parts.

Quality and Consistency: Despite being cheap to buy, Genuine Honda Parts are built to a high standard of quality and consistency. When you replace a component with a Genuine Honda Part, you know that it will function exactly as it should.

No Guessing: When you use Genuine Honda Parts, there is no guess work. Your mechanic simply looks up what part Honda originally used, then replaces it with the exact part.
Warranty Backed. Honda’s warranties only cover Genuine Honda Parts. Any failure or damaged caused by using aftermarket parts will not be covered and could potentially void your warranty.
